Police say the men stole a backhoe from a construction site and destroyed the structure housing the ATM.
Police have arrested two men for allegedly trying to steal an ATM from a central Florida bank by using a backhoe.
Police in Winter Haven arrested Francisco Hernandez, 54, and Jesus Antonio Sanchez, 50, who are both from Clewiston, according to a New York Times report. They were taken to the Polk County Jail on Saturday and charged with grand theft.
Police accused the men of first stealing a backhoe from a construction site and then tearing down the structure housing the ATM at CenterState Bank branch in Winter Haven shortly before midnight on Friday.
The men successfully loaded the ATM on the bed of a truck and left the area, but were found not long after. They had not yet been successful in opening the ATM.
According to reports, the suspects had told hte officers they were trying to gather scrap metal and couldn’t remember where they got the items that were found on them.
Winter Haven is a city located in Polk County, Florida. It has a population of 33,874 accoridng to the 2010 census. It is located in the center of Florida.
