A recent study indicated that these supplements can cause harmful side effects and are often overused by people -- but which ones and why?
A recent study has come to the alarming conclusion that workout supplements pose a big risk to your body, as most people aren’t aware that they are overusing them. But you might not realize just how common these supplements are for just about anyone who works out regularly, so don’t think you’re in the clear.
In fact, if you use any common whey protein powders, creating supplements, or L-carnitine, you’re at risk, according to an NPR report. A study published at the American Psychological Association’s annual convention that examined 195 gym-going men between the ages of 18 and 65 found that about 40 percent of participants increased their use of supplements over time, 22 percent were replacing their meals with them, 8 percent had been cautioned by doctors to slow down on using them, and 3 percent had to be hospitalized from the side effects.
But just what is it about these three different supplements that makes them potentially dangerous if used in excess?
Whey protein powder. Whey protein is essentially a mix of globular proteins that is isolated from whey, which is a liquid by-product in cheese production. It is one of the most common dietary supplements, sold as a powder in large canisters that offer a huge boost of protein in each serving. Protein is an essential component to muscle-building. However high doses can result in some digestive issues, as well as fatigue and headache. High protein diets in the long term can place a strain on the kidneys because of excess waste products that are known as ketones.
Creatine. Creatine, which also comes in powder form, is a nitrogenous organic acid that helps supply energy to the cells in the body, especially muscle cells. It is popular among athletes and bodybuilders who want to increase muscle mass. However, there are a variety of health effects associated with it: kidney damage has been associated with creating use, and it may affect the function of the liver as well.
