Grammy-winning artist says he will seek the office of president in 2020.
Rapper Kayne West said in an interview this week that he “definitely” plans to run for president in 2020, according to an article on reuters.com.
West made his political ambitions known at the end of his speech at the MTV Video Award show in Los Angeles last month, but most thought the rapper was making a joke.
But, in an interview with Vanity Fair, the rock star, who is married to Kin Kardashian, said “Oh, definitely.” when asked about his aspirations.
The 38-year-old Grammy winning artist said that initially people were stunned at his announcement, but the reaction has been positive.
West was quoted as telling the magazine, “As soon as I said that, it was like, ‘Wait a second, we would really be into that, because actually if you think about it, he’s extremely thoughtful. Every time he’s ever gotten in trouble, he was really jumping in front of a bullet for someone else. He’s probably the most honest celebrity that we have.'”
He added, “I didn’t approach that because I thought it would be fun.” He has not identified which a political party he would be most likely to represent, if any. He admitted he has some growing up to do.
West noted his father has two masters degrees and his late mother had a Ph.D and worked for civil rights organizations. He told the magazine, “It’s fun to be a rock star, and I’ll never not be one I guess, but there’ll be a point where I become my mother’s child.”
A group of supporters have started a political action committee, Ready for Kayne, and they are hoping he will identify as a Republican. At this point, the group has less than 100 followers on Twitter and Facebook.
Forbes magazine ranked West 7th highest paid hip-hop act over the last year, with an estimated $22 million in earnings from his music, and endorsements.
