A man who was fighting an eviction from his home is dead after barricading himself in his home and shooting it out with police.
One officer was injured during the standoff, which happened when a SWAT team was sent to the community of Brookhaven 50 miles south of Jackson Monday evening over reports that a suspect was barricading himself in an apartment he was supposed to be evicted from, according to a New York Times report.
Authorities aren’t sure if the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or if he had shot himself.
While he was being evicted, the suspect fired a shot throught he door at officers, and then barricaded himself in the apartment, continuing to fire the weapon out the window of his bedroom. Brookhaven police then asked the Mississippi Highway Patrol to send their SWAT team.
One officer received injuries that were not life threatening, and it’s not clear how he was injured.
Residents reported hearing gunfire for hours that evening as the standoff went on.
