Rise of the Tomb Raider, a new video game exclusive to the Xbox One console, is being reviewed favorably, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The game, to be released on Tuesday, marks the outcome of an exclusive rights of distribution deal between Microsoft and Rise of the Tomb Raider publisher Eidos Interactive. As a result, the game will be sold exclusively for Microsoft’s Xbox One console months before it becomes available for gamers on Playstation 4 or PC.
Rise of the Tomb Raider marks the most recent entry in the long running Tomb Raider video games series, which began in 1996. More recent entries in the series have been categorized by a more realistic tone, whereas previous games were criticized for objectifying its female protagonist.
Reviews indicate the new game is impressive in terms of its look and feel, though its storyline is the subject of contention among games writers.
While the technology behind the game is being deemed impressive, its addictive gameplay is what is being lauded more than anything. Among the game’s highlights include the ability for players to craft items, climb and explore a variety of impressive environments, and participate in exciting gun fights with enemies in exotic locations.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is the follow up to Tomb Raider, the last game in the series which was released in 2013. Both games were developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Eidos Interactive.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is considered to be a step up from Tomb Raider, which reviewed relatively favorably upon its release though not to the extent of its sequel, which received an A- rating from Entertainment Weekly wrier Aaron Morales.
The release of the Xbox One game marks one of many big budget, highly anticipated video games intended for release during holiday 2015.
