Ronda Rousey, the champion of the Ultimate Fight Championship, has publicly announced her support of Bernie Sanders in his efforts to gain the Democratic nomination for the 2016 presidential election.
Speaking with Maxim Magazine, the mixed martial arts fighter and actress said she decided to endorse Sanders because of his opposition to large corporations.
“I’m voting for Bernie Sanders, because he doesn’t take any corporate money,” said Rousey. “I don’t think politicians should be allowed to take money for their campaigns from outside interests.”
This news may come as a shock to some after Donald Trump claimed early this summer that Rousey was in favor of a Trump presidency. She denies ever having supported Trump.
“I just really wouldn’t trust the guy with running my country, that’s all,” said Rousey. “I’m not really going to get into specifics of it, but, I mean, I don’t want a reality TV star to be running my country.”
Rousey went on to say that in the event Sanders lost the primary, she still would not vote for Hilary Clinton. Rather, she would find a viable third party candidate to vote for, just as she did in the 2012 race when she cast her ballot in favor of Rosanne Barr.
“To be honest, in 2012 I was against both candidates and so I just picked any third party because I thought if more people voted for third parties then they’d have to take third parties seriously,” said Rousey. ‘If [Sanders] doesn’t win against Hillary [Clinton], then I’ll probably vote for a third party again,’
Neither Bernie Sanders nor Donald Trump have commented on Rousey’s announcement.
