Will 2016 be the year of Virtual Reality?
Virtual reality has slowly been creeping into the market in the last few years, but in 2016, things could explode.
Or, they might not. Many experts believe that technology could actually be off to a slow start next year. But sooner or later, VR is likely to take off, and there certainly could be huge developments next year, according to a Fortune report.
Oculus Rift has perhaps been the most visible product in the VR marketplace. Facebook bought it for $2 billion not long ago, a few short years since it first entered the fray in 2012. But with all the hype, VR headsets haven’t really broken into the marketplace — at least not yet. So what’s everyone waiting for?
Oculus Rift is still holding stead to a launch in the first quarter of 2016, with pre-orders beginning before the end of the year. Meanwhile, Oculus and Samsung have partnered to create Gear VR, flying off of Amazon’s virtual shelves, proving that the demand is there if the VR industry can tap into it.
Another VR headset called The Vie, produced by HTC and Valve, is poised to come out next year, as is Sony’s PlayStation VR. So if you’re looking forward to experiencing virtual reality, 2016 could be the big year where all the stars align — provided everything goes right, never a given with brand new technology and especially considering that many of these products lack firm launch dates.
But with so many VR products waiting in the wings and hoping to push out products next year, something has got to give soon, and VR technology could be all over the place by the time the curtain closes in 2016.
