It was funded by $8.8 million raised through Kickstarter.
It’s called “Exploding Kittens,” and it is the latest app sensation, now that it’s finally available on iOS.
The tabletop card game will be coming to Android as well pretty soon, according to a Mashable report.
You can but it on an iOS device for $1.99, and in-app purchases are free for a limited time. Up to six people can play at a time, even if you don’t have an internet connection.
It’s the most funded game in Kickstarter history, raising $8.8 million from 200,000 people when the campaign began Feb. 19, 2015. It was created by Matthew Inman, the founder of the popular site The Oatmeal. He had two collaborators on the project: Elan Lee and Shane Small.
Basically, the game works like Russian Roulette, as players draw from a deck until an exploding kitten suddenly knocks the person who drew it out of hte game. Special cards can be used to prevent an exploding kitten, either for yourself or for another player.
The creators describe the game as “a highly strategic kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette. Players take turns drawing cards until someone draws an exploding kitten and loses the game. The deck is made up of cards that let you avoid exploding by peeking at cards before you draw, forcing your opponent to draw multiple cards, or shuffling the deck.
“The game gets more and more intense with each card you draw because fewer cards left in the deck means a greater chance of drawing the kitten and exploding in a fiery ball of feline hyperbole.”
