A baby almost lost its toe in an incident that has parents worldwide talking.
Scott Walker was checking his infant daughter’s foot when he noticed something strange.
The 32-year-old father from Kansas found a strand of hair wrapped tightly around one of the baby’s toes, and he “freaked out,” according to an ABC News report.
Walker heard his 5-month-old daughter Molly start crying on Jan. 21. He and his wife Jessica determined that it couldn’t be feeding, changing, or a pacifier. And then they noticed that her right foot appeared to be sweating while her left foot was not.
They removed the sock and noticed that one of her toes was swollen. Upon closer inspection, they found a hair tourniquet, strangling her toe and causing it to swell.
Fortunately, Jessica Walker is a registered nurse and was able to use a pair of tweezers to remove the hair with the aid of a magnifying glass. As a result, they were able to save the baby from losing her toe.
It was a shocking find that prompted the Walkers to share a photo of the foot on Facebook to warn others that it can happen to their infant. It was shared more than 24,000 times over a period of two weeks.
It’s a pretty rare thing to happen to an infant, but it does happen. It’s more likely to happen on a toe than a finger, and it will often be strings from socks rather than hair tourniquets. So the next time your baby is crying and you can’t figure out why, it might be wise to at least check the toes.
