SyFy is teaming up with Amazon in a big new initiative.
The SyFy network has never been afraid to get a little crazy, and true to form, they’re about to do something no other entertainment channel has done.
SyFy has announced that it will be the first entertainment channel to use Amazon’s Alexa voice-controlled software, a big win for Amazon which has been pushing third parties to get involved.
That means users will be able to ask Alexa for episode recaps, previews of the next episode, or the channel’s schedule, according to a SyFy statement.
It’s part of a concerted effort by Amazon to get third parties to use Alexa. The more companies to use Alexa and add more content to its software, the more comprehensive and usable Alexa becomes.
The new skill will essentially be a talking talking DVD extra. You can ask Alexa what will be on the next episode of 12 Monkeys, as well as for information about the fourth installment of the Sharknado franchise.
“What is Alexa? Well, if you have the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Amazon Tap or the Amazon Fire TV device, you know that Alexa is the brain behind those devices, the voice companion with the pleasant female tone that answers questions and responds to commands. Alexa is like a digital concierge to any of your internet queries,” SyFy said in the statement. “Syfy is the first entertainment network to launch an Alexa skill, which allows you to interact with Alexa for immediate and exclusive news about Syfy’s shows simply by requesting it. For example, you can ask Alexa ‘What happened on the last 12 Monkeys?’ or ‘What happens in the next episode of Hunters?’ and Alexa will answer with the information you’ve requested.”
