You won't believe this incredible new factory in the middle of nowhere in Nevada.
Tesla is hosting a massive party for its new sprawling Gigafactory, and you’re probably not invited.
The grand opening of the Gigafactory will be on July 29th, although the facility in Nevada still has a ways to go before it is operational, according to an Engadget report.
Tesla, the brainchild of SpaceX founder Elon Musk, will be building car batteries soon for its Model 3 model, and it plans to produce 500,000 cars per year by 2018, so that’s a lot of batteries. Engadget speculates that this unveiling could be critical in reassuring buyers it can meet these optimistic goals.
It’s definitely an impressive factory out in the middle of nowhere, a giant box situated in a huge open lot surrounded by mountains. Tesla is using the Gigafactory to cut the cost of electric cars, and it will be critical in the launch of the Model 3, as the battery is the most costly part of electric cars.
Tesla is hoping this massive factory will cut down on those costs, much like sister company SpaceX hopes landing rockets on launch pads in the Atlantic Ocean will slash the cost of sending rockets to space — an impressive feat it achieved recently.
