The autoimmune condition has led to anxiety and depression
Selena Gomez announced she will take a break from her career due to lupus complications.
The 23-year-old singer has periodically suffered from depression and anxiety as a result of the inflammatory disease, leading her to reconsider her schedule.
Gomez explained to People magazine: “As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways. I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.”
The schedule included her Revival Tour to support her 2015 album. She shared: “I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off.”
The star also knows she’s not alone and encourages others to address their own issues, as it’s ultimately the best way to move forward.
“Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues.”
An insider had previously stated she was now relieved to finally understand the cause of her symptoms.
“She feels relieved that she can now make more sense of why she was feeling the way she was and is optimistic about the future,” the source added.”
Gomez had planned to donate money to the Alliance for Lupus Research, mainly from her Revival Tour ticket sales.
