President Barack Obama will have a permanent mark on the natural world.
President Barack Obama now has a fish to call his own — actually, an entire species. That’s because three scientists have thanked the president for protecting Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument by naming one of the fish species endemic to the area after him.
Obama recently created the world’s largest protected marine monument by expanding the area of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, and this particular fish is the only known fish pecies endemic to the area. Obama had expended the monument to included 582,578 square miles and the 7,000 species that call the area home
The fish, which is just 1.5 inches long, was discovered in June in a deep sea reef in Papahānaumokuākea in the Northwest Hawaii Islands.
