An internal affairs report found that Cole used excessive force on Yourse and violated agency rules.
A shocking video has emerged depicting a white officer in Greensboro, N.C. arresting a black man who was doing nothing but sitting on his porch waiting for his mother. Police arrested Dejuan Yourse after growing increasingly suspicious of his presence on his porch, repeatedly questioning whether it was his house or if he was trying to break into it.
Police were responding to a call of a possible burglary after a man with a shovel was seen trying to open the house’s garage. When they encountered Yourse on the porch, he explained that he had misplaced the key to his mother’s house and was waiting for her to get home.
This didn’t satisfy officers, who tried to call his mother to convince officers that he was allowed to be there. However, the call went to voice mail. So he told them to talk to neighbors, but instead police officers escalated the situation in minutes and eventually arrested him.
The incident, which happened back in June, triggered an internal affairs investigation. The subsequent report found that Cole used excessive force on Yourse and violated agency rules. Yourse was not convicted of any crime.
Cole resigned two months after hte incidnet, and so did the other officer involved last week.
The body camera footage went public recently and shows the entire incident as it happened. Yourse started to become agitated after enduring repeated questioning, and Cole yanked Yourse’s phone from his hand at one point and then punches him in the face.
