Scientists are shocked by the person that Trump has tapped to head the Environmental Protection Agency.
Donald Trump has made no secret of how he feels about scientists who believe in global warming, so he decided not to appoint a scientist as head of the Environmental Protection Agency at all – instead, he’s chosen Myron Ebell, a person who rejects climate change and is likely to roll back regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Trump once said in a tweet that he believes global warming is a hoax invented by the Chinese to make U.S. manufacturing less competitive. While he backed off those claims later as a “joke,” he still doubts the overwhelming scientific consensus that man-made global warming is a reality and a major threat. Therefore, Ebell is a shocking pick, but perhaps not a surprising one.
Ebell has argued that the United States should open up federal lands for drilling and coal mining, as well as turning over more authority to the states. He has also called on the United States to reject the climate accord signed in Paris last year, which has world leaders worried.
Ebell is from the conservative policy group Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), which gets funding from ExxonMobil among others.
“The Trump Administration will make America energy independent,” Trump’s website states. “Our energy policies will make full use of our domestic energy sources, including traditional and renewable energy sources. America will unleash an energy revolution that will transform us into a net energy exporter, leading to the creation of millions of new jobs, while protecting the country’s most valuable resources – our clean air, clean water, and natural habitats. America is sitting on a treasure trove of untapped energy. In fact, America possesses more combined coal, oil, and natural gas resources than any other nation on Earth. These resources represent trillions of dollars in economic output and countless American jobs, particularly for the poorest Americans.”
