The star wants to spoil his children, but not too much
Neil Patrick Harris’ daughter has big dreams this holiday season. The 43-year-old actor revealed he was shocked upon reading her Christmas wish list as she blatantly asked for a life-sized doll house.
He explained on The Late Show on Wednesday: “I said, ‘Harper, a life-sized dollhouse for you is just a house. You want me to get a house for you?’ And she said, ‘Yeah.’
What is it with these giant gifts? ‘Where do we put a life-sized dollhouse that’s large enough for you as a person?’ And she said, ‘On the roof.’ ”
And she’s not the only one obsessing over big presents, as her town brother is wishing for a bounce house along with a life-sized rocket ship.
He added: “That’s what he’s after. We live in the city, that’s what I said to him. ‘Where are we supposed to put a life-sized rocket?’ It’s gonna be a late night on the 24th.”
And although Neil and his husband David Burtka – who married in 2014 – will try to please their kids as much as possible, they aren’t aiming for anything life-sized this year.
The actor’s strict views aren’t all that surprising to the twins – whom he had through a surrogate mother – as he recently revealed to be much more firm with them than his partner.
“[I’m the] bad cop when it comes to disciplining the kids” and [my parenting style is similar to a] camp counsellor rather than a maternal nurturer.
With kids you need to be able to answer their questions in earnest and you need to try and get from the way they are asking the question to what they might actually be wanting to know. The more communicative they have become, the sweeter it’s been for me.”
