The New Year's weekend raises questions about what's going to be open and closed over the next couple days, and we have the answers.
It’s kind of a weird situation with New Year’s Day falling on a Sunday and the official federal holiday taking place on Jan. 2, and if you need to go out and run some errands, you may be wondering whether big-box stores like Target or Walmart are open.
For Target, most stores are going to be open during holidays from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, and from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Sundays, so that will probably be the case in your town.
For Walmart, it’s the same. They’ll be staying open from 7 a.m. until midnight around New Year’s, which is their normal operating hours. It seems that New Year’s just isn’t big enough of a holiday to warrant shutting down, and the retailers recognize that people will be out and about looking to shop and generally getting on with their lives with Christmas over and done with.
So that means not just Walmart and Target, but also stores like Best Buy, Kohl’s, and others will be open over the New Year’s weekend. However, keep in mind that some are local in malls and may close earlier than a retailer in its own building.
Local, state and federal government offices will be shut down over the holiday, as they normally would be over the weekend and on a federal holiday. Most banks will be closed Jan. 2, although some will be open, so check with your branch.
Most local transit will run on limited weekend hours on Monday, so adjust your plans accordingly.
