An Indonesian local thought he'd found a stranded boat, but when he got closer, he realized it was something very, very different.
An astonishing find in Indonesia is taking the Internet by storm, and no one’s quite sure what it is. A local man in the Maluku province found a huge mass that had washed on the shore of a beach, thinking at first it was a stranded boat before getting closer and realizing it was a dead animal of sort.
And the debate continues to rage on its origin, with the Jakarta Post and others calling it a dead giant squid, but others claiming it’s the carcass of a whale. Whatever it is, it was found on the Hulung Beach on Serum Island on Tuesday by 37-year-old Asrul Tuanakoata, according to the Jakarta Post.
“The unusual finding attracted scores of residents to Hulung Beach at Iha village in West Seram district,” the Post reported. “The reason for the giant squid washing up on the shore is still unknown, but it is believed to have been dead for at least three days before it was found.”
The animal is huge, measuring around 50 feet in length, so it would certainly be one of the biggest giant squid every found if that’s what it is.
Giant squid sightings are extremely rare. It’s only been the last few years when we’ve actually managed to photograph and videotape giant squid in the wild, and there are only a couple of instances of that. Dead giant squid washing up are a pretty rare occurrence still, so this is a significant event if it’s confirmed to be a giant squid.
