A Michigan woman sacrificed her own life in order to save that of her unborn child, a story that has touched the heartstrings of people around the nation. Carrie DeKlyen died surrounded by family in Ann Arbor at University of Michigan Hospital after declining to take treatment for cancer that was eating away at her, all to save her baby who had yet to be born.

Her husband, Nick DeKlyen, said that his last words to her were, “I’ll see you in Heaven,” and that everyone stayed with her until she “took her last breath.”

Doctors removed Carrie’s feeding and breathing tubes on Thursday after giving birth to her daughter, Life Lynn Deklyen. The mother decided not to have chemotherapy for her brain cancer because it would have meant ending her pregnancy.
