Authorities in Morocco are incensed at the sale of a dinosaur tail at an auction in Mexico recently.
A dinosaur tail that just sold for $95,000 at auction in Mexico is causing fury on the part of authorities in Morocco, who allege that it has been illegally trafficked out of the country from which it originated. The fossil, which stretches 13 feet long, once belonged to a sauropod dinosaur known as an Atlasaurus, and dates back 160 million years.
The tail would have been discovered in the Atlas mountains, which are located in Morocco, where other important dinosaur discoveries have been made. The dinosaur it belonged to weighed in excess of 20 tons and was more than 50 feet long.
The tail was auctioned off on Jan. 16, and it is not the first time that there has been controversy over a dinosaur fossil from Morocco sold at auction. Last April, Parisian authorities gave back the skeleton of a sea dinosaur that was to be put up for auction and was dated at 66 million years old.
