Scientists have found what appears to be a stone shrine built by the Aztecs that served as a map of the entire universe.
A remarkable discovery deep in the Mexican jungle is making waves through the archaeological community. Researchers believe they have discovered a shrine of some sort in a natural pool at the foot of the Iztaccihuatl volcano that looks like a miniature model of the universe.
Rather than a map of stars or planets, it looks like a map of the universe as the ancient Aztec civilization envisioned it. Researchers think it may have been constructed in this pool in recognition of their got Cipactli, a sea monster who they believed created the universe.
Situated at 13,000 feet in elevation, this stone shrine can be found in the center of the pool and almost appear to float on the surface. This might be an homage to Cipactli who, as legend had it, hovered over the Earth’s waters.
